McKesson falls $9B on accounting problem
Article Abstract:
McKesson HBOC lost $8.6 billion in market value on Apr 28, 1999, as its share price declined by 47% to $34.50, with a transaction volume of 41 million shares. The downturn comes as the company reported that it overstated year-ago sales figures at HBOC, its recently-acquired health software division, by at least $42.2 million. Company CEO Mark Pulido notes that the sales figures are not yet finalized and has been subject to so-called contingencies, while analysts note that the company's fiscal snag reflects the aggressive bill-and-hold accounting procedure that affected Sunbeam in 1997 and resulted in the departure of its CEO, Al Dunlap.
