Microsoft plans to spin off Expedia

Microsoft Corp plans to spin off Internet travel site Expedia as part of an attempt to aggressively compete against major Internet players, such as America Online and Yahoo. Microsoft, which will continue to own majority shares in Expedia, will allocate millions of dollars to promote the products of its Internet service and portal, MSN, and attract customers. One analyst said that the spin-off would allow Expedia to compete aggressively at it will become a stand-alone entity.

IExchange is hoping that buying and selling stock market predictions over the Internet will eventually become a huge market. The Web-based company, founded by Bill Gross of Idealabs, will be launched on Oct 11, 1999. IExchange, which has received an investment of $5 million from venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, will join an emerging business field that already has players that include Predict It and ExpertCentral.com.
