Monsanto draws fire from farmers
Article Abstract:
Monsanto Canada Inc has been receiving criticisms from farmers who have expressed opposition to the company's means of enforcing the patent on a technology used to genetically alter its Roundup Ready canola seeds. One farmer said that using Roundup gives the Mississauga, Canada-based biotech company the right to conduct an inspection of the farmers for three years. But Monsanto argued that the inspection or audit is necessary to protect its patent on the Roundup technology and to make sure that the company gets any kind of return for developing the genetically modified seeds.

Bertelsmann gets takeover approval
Article Abstract:
German media company Bertelsmann Publishing AG has obtained Industry Minister John Manley's approval on its acquisition of Random House Canada and Doubleday Canada Ltd. Berterlsmann has acquired Random House Canada from Advance Publications Inc for $1.1 billion in early 1999. Doubleday Canada has been under Berterlsmann since the German media company acquired its parent in the 1980s. DoubleDay recently argued that it was not a Canadian company, and thus, should not be covered by the government's restrictions on foreign ownership.
