The Cannes International Film Festival ran from May 9-20, 1996, and featured a surprisingly strong selection of movies. Many independent films gained the spotlight, including David Cronenberg's 'Crash' and Mike Leigh's 'Secrets and Lies.' Other films and stars are discussed.

Is Oscar out of his mind?

Article Abstract:

'Apollo 13' and 'Sense and Sensibility' seem like good Oscar choices, and 'Il Postimo' is an excellent picture, but 'Babe' and 'Braveheart' were nominated over such strong films as 'Leaving Las Vegas' and 'Dead Man Walking.' Other pictures are also discussed.

Rebel masterpiece: a provocative Quebec movie arrives in Cannes

Article Abstract:

'Leolo,' a motion picture directed by Jean-Claude Lauzon of Quebec, is the first film from Canada to be chosen to compete at the Cannes Film Festival since 1989. 'Leolo' is a semi-autobiographical thriller about a drug dealer.
