New Jersey Bell gets permission to rewire state for fiber optics
Article Abstract:
New Jersey Bell Telephone Co plans to begin rewiring New Jersey with fiber optic cable, replacing 56.3 million miles of copper wire. The company hopes to install a complete fiber-optics network by the year 2010, which can offer electronic billboards, classified advertising, electronic reading and shopping from a television screen using telephone buttons. New legislation opening up telecommunications services should also create jobs and services and may usher in competition between newspapers and telephone companies. Proponents of the new law claim the deregulation allows telephone companies to make use of emerging technologies. Opponents claim it hurts the newspaper industry and may cause job losses in newspapers, cable companies and television stations. New Jersey Governor Jim Florio also signed a bill that requires more specific information about costs and consent for use of 900-number audiotex services.

A.T.&T. to play a role in delivering cable TV programs
Article Abstract:
AT&T says it will provide all the necessary equipment and technology in order to develop new television choices, such as significantly increasing the number of channels available in the current cable systems and improving the features of pay-per-view. This technology would make video on command possible by allowing a customer to select a movie from a comprehensive list at any time. AT&T says it will utilize its video compression technology in order to compress the large amounts of information contained in a television signal to allow more channels to fit into a cable system. AT&T will also work with Comstream Corp in order to deliver television signals through satellite.
