New U.S.-Japan accord on semiconductors
Article Abstract:
US and Japanese electronics companies enter into a trade agreement with the goal of increasing the Japanese market share of US and other non-Japanese semiconductor suppliers to 20 percent by the end of 1992. US and other foreign chip makers currently hold a 14.4 percent market share in Japan. The 10 largest Japanese electronics companies will provide foreign semiconductor suppliers with advance notice of their needs during 3rd qtr and 4th qtr 1992. Prior agreements have not been successful and some US companies have threatened to seek sanctions against Japanese companies. Industry leaders see this agreement as a way of preventing such action. Because advance notice does not guarantee placement of orders, it is unlikely that the full 20 percent market share will be achieved by the end of 1992. Industry observers note that the trade agreement may provide only a temporary solution to the US-Japan semiconductor trade imbalance.

Inquiries by the F.T.C. on Intel cited
Article Abstract:
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigates Intel Corp for its alleged anti-competitive business practices. The FTC, which has not begun any formal inquiries, received complaints from the computer industry for Intel's business practices. Intel, a maker of microprocessors, dominates the market with its presence and is creating a stir with its promotional and pricing policies. Intel's control over the microprocessor market is so strong that its allocation policies have often determined what computer manufacturers prospered and which ones failed. Intel will be the second company in the computer industry to be investigated by the FTC for unfair trade practices if the FTC decides to pursue a more thorough investigation.
