Canadian politics has always been enlivened by low humor, such as the jokes made about former Tory party leader Kim Campbell's ample backside, but such jokes run afoul of modern notions of political correctness. Some right-wing writers took offense at a joke uttered by Mary Walsh at a PEN event.

Parliament bowed to political correctness by grandly barring Holocaust-disbeliever Ernst Zundel from staging a press conference on parliament grounds. This folly gave Zundel a publicity bonanza, set a bad free-speech precedent, and distracted the public from its shady pay raise grab.
