Background: the scandal era
Article Abstract:
The analysis of the scandal era of political coverage from the 1960s to the 1980s is presented. The press used the public's right to know concept to publish the first reports of alcohol abuse among key political figures. In the 1970's, the exposure of two congressmen involved in alcohol and sex scandals, respectively, fueled the press's search for newsworthy items of intimate nature. In the 1980's the revelation of Gary Hart's alleged affair with a model by the press consequently fueled its preoccupation with uncovering any present or past sexual affairs of politicians.

Article Abstract:
Press coverage of political candidates alleged to have extramarital affairs is examined. The lines between private and public lives are often blurred, causing the press to treat the sexual aspects of a candidate's life on the same level as their political beliefs. Many also feel politicians' characters can be determined by examining their sex lives. News stories on issues such as adultery are decided on a story by story basis, guided between the two principles of the code of ethics in journalism, the individual's right to privacy and the public's right to know.

Article Abstract:
Contemporary Native Americans face current issues with a modern perspective. On the quincentennial anniversary of Columbus, American Indians would rather use foresight and plan their future despite feelings of resentmentfor the discoverer. The opening of the National Museum of the American Indians also generates new viewpoints on tribal exhibits. The Native Americans are acutely aware of governmental issues concerning Indian tribes. They are now aware that what concerns one distinct Indian tribe affects different Indian tribes in turn.
