Ontario is a crucial battleground in the 1997 national election campaign in Canada. The Liberal Party might not repeat its 1993 victory if right-wing voters desert the Reform Party and support the Conservative party rather than split their votes.

The six byelections scheduled for Mar 25, 1996, demonstrate that democracy operates in many different ways even within the dame political party. Additional more subtle messages for Liberals apparent in the byelections are described.
