Patent case still clouds RIM's future after U.S. court upholds ruling: Say firm did infringe, but sends appeal to lower court because of judge's actions

A large patent infringement case will go on over Research In Motion Ltd. for a couple of months. On December 14 2004, a U.S. federal appeals court upheld a ruling that the company infringed on a U.S. firms intellectual property but sent the case back to a district court because of a judge's mistake in defining some of the technology involved in the claim.

RIM to appeal court payout ruling

NTP Inc.'s lawsuit victory over Research In Motion Ltd., which produces the BlackBerry wireless e-mail products, will be appealed. RIM, which lost the patent infringement case, was ordered to pay $8.9 million to NTP in addition to a previous judgement of $23.1 million.
