Philanthropy in America: Bonds for vaccines
Article Abstract:
The event involving the issue of a bond on behalf of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), which raised $1 billion in London in December 2006 to vaccinate children in the poorest countries against polio, hepatitis B, yellow fever and other preventable illnesses, not only linked philanthropy and business, but also tightened the ties between philanthropy and the government. The bond issue is expected to enable the program to immunize 500 million children against vaccine-preventable diseases before 2015.

Philanthropy in America: Red Cross Shake-up
Article Abstract:
The American Red Cross has proposed significant changes in its operation following a series of upheavals including the resignations of two presidents in a row, revelations of failures in delivering emergency aid, and pressure from a powerful Senate Committee. Its Board of Directors agreed, among other things, to reduce its size to a maximum of 20 members by 2012, to diminish the members' role in day-to-day management and to strengthen internal auditing.
