High court protects drivers' license data
Article Abstract:
The persisting issue of online privacy over the Internet may be affected by a unanimous Supreme Court decision on Jan 12, 2000, which held that Congress has the power to prohibit states from selling home addresses, telephone numbers, vehicle descriptions and other data collected by motor vehicle departments. Legal experts believe that the ruling will pave the way for the federal government to enact legislation to protect medical information, financial data, consumer marketing facts and other information obtained through electronic commerce.

High court sides with Playboy
Article Abstract:
The Supreme Court ruled by a 5-4 decision that a provision of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 stipulating that cable operators may show adult programming only between 10 pm and 6 am was in violation of the free speech rights of channels. The cable subsidiary of Playboy Enterprises Inc has sued to override the law. The provision was intended to prevent children from seeing sex oriented programs on cable. The decision now clears the way for operators to show such programs 24 hours a day.
