Philip Services awaits results of test for hazardous waste

Article Abstract:

Philip Services Corp., a Hamilton, Canada-based landfill operator, is awaiting the outcome of tests conducted on waste dumped into its Taro landfill in Southern Ontario. The company has been told to refrain from dumping chemical waste from Detroit, MI, into the landfill until the Ontario Environment Ministry has determined that the waste is safe for the site. John Steele, spokesman for the ministry, said that the ministry is testing for proofs of heavy metal contents, including cyanide. Steele said that the question is whether the waste that goes into the landfill is appropriate for the site.

Philip completes purchase of Hamilton land

Article Abstract:

Philip Services Corp., a Hamilton, Ontario-based scrap metal firm, has completed its acquisition of four hectares of land in Hamilton from a division of Stelco Inc. for C$500,000. The purchase was pushed through by Philip Services despite the recent cash flow problems it is experiencing and its inability to pay interest on its $1.1 billion debt. A spokesperson for the company said Philip Services will amortize the payments for the land, which is situated near its Parkdale scrap yard, over six months.
