More visitors spend more in Canada
Article Abstract:
Visitors from outside the country spent a total of C$13.7 billion in 1998, up by 13% from C$12.1 billion in 1997, and about 1.5% of GDP. The total number of tourists reached 48 million, up by 7% from 1997. This was the highest number foreign travelers since 50 million people visited Canada during the Expo '67. The surge in tourist traffic has been attributed to the record number of visits by Americans. However, the number of visits by non-US travellers dipped by more than 8% to 4.2 million in 1998.
