EPA targets Potash Corp
Article Abstract:
Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc is being investigated for alleged environmental crimes committed at its nitrogen fertilizer facility in Geismar, LA. The Environmental Protection Agency, using data obtained in 1997, ranked the Geismar plant as the No 1 polluter in Louisiana. On May 11, 1999, around 90 federal agents raided the plant, which produces ammonia, nitric acid, nitrogen solution and phosphoric acid. A senior executive for Potash said that the company has no knowledge of the allegations made by the EPA.

Article Abstract:
Saskatoon, Canada-based Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc responds to slow markets with a decision to reduce its US production of feed phosphate, nitrogen fertilizer and solid phosphate fertilizer. A plant in Virginia will be permanently shuttered to reduce feed phosphate output by 6%, while plants in Nebraska and Iowa are planned to be temporarily closed to reduce nitrogen production by 10%. Meanwhile, capacity of solid phosphate fertilzer will be slashed 12.5%.
