Power squeeze in Alberta may mean darker, colder winter
Article Abstract:
Alberta, Canada is facing potential occurences of power outages in winter-1998, amid tight supply of electricity in the province. Due to strong economic growth of between 4% to 6% annually over the past four years, as well as an influx of new businesses and residents, demand for electrical power in Alberta has increased by more than 300 megawatts, or 3%, annually. However, the electricity grid of the province is yet to add a major generating station since 1994, and members of Alberta's electricity industry are now drafting a plan to alleviate the load. The plan includes strategies such as offering monetary compensation to business clients that shut down or reduce power utilization during potential emergency periods in winter-1998.
