Privacy: the tip of the iceberg
Article Abstract:
A debate rages over 'Caller ID,' which is a new telephone service that displays the number of a calling telephone on a small liquid crystal display (LCD) screen. Some say that privacy is enhanced by such a device because a receiving person can screen calls; others say privacy is eroded because the calling person is forced, for an example, to divulge an unlisted number. In either case, the computer technology that is pushing advances in telephones is likely to be the focus of debate about privacy in the 1990's. Advanced Caller ID systems can match incoming numbers to databases of information, so that an answering person can do an instant check and be ready for a call. Also, computers can obtain and cross-reference information using various databases, causing some to fear that such information might be used for purposes altogether unrelated to the original reasons for collecting such data.

Pushing the frontiers of the electronic age
Article Abstract:
Mitchell D. Kapor, founder of Lotus Development Corp and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), describes the electronic frontier as a digital infrastructure that will connect homes, schools and offices for entertainment, education and business. The EFF is rooted in the vision of freedom, diversity and openness, and believes strongly that the interests of the free enterprise system and free expression coincide. Kapor and John Perry Barlow founded EFF as a way by which the impact of digital technology on society can be explored. The EFF is involved in studies relating to infrastructure issues, privacy and other public policy issues.
