Jean Chretien repeatedly promised during his 1993 election campaign that he would abolish the GST, but Finance Minister Paul Martin admitted in Apr 1996, that the GST will not be abolished, only reformed. Liberal MP John Nunziata was expelled by the party after he protested this issue.
