Putting some punch into management show-and-tell: a new Harvard Graphics provides both standard and customized charts
Article Abstract:
Harvard Graphics 3.0, which costs $595 or $125 to upgrade, from the Software Publishing Corp, Mountain View, CA, is the newest version of the most popular presentation program used in businesses. The program runs on MS-DOS microcomputers and requires at least an 80286 microprocessor with a hard disk and 640 Kbytes of system memory. Harvard Graphics provides tools needed to create various kinds of images: 35-mm slides, transparencies for overhead projectors, paper handouts or 'screenshows,' which is what Harvard Graphics calls slide shows for display on computer screens. Harvard Graphics does a particularly outstanding job on 'word charts,' in which a speaker emphasizes words with charts, drawings, colors, background patterns or symbols. A book that covers guidelines for using word charts is 'The Presentation Design Book: Projecting a Good Image With Your Desktop Computer,' by Margaret Y. Rabb, $24.95, by Ventana Press, Chapel Hill, NC.

Some summer books for computer nerds
Article Abstract:
Several computer industry-related books are discussed. Robert X. Cringely's $19.95 'Accidental Empires' is a book about the emergence of the computer industry and the individuals who have climbed to the top. The book has aroused the anger of Microsoft Corp's CEO Bill Gates, who claims the book is full of lies. Jim Seymour's $26.95 'On the Road, the Portable Computing Bible' is a collection of tips for portable computer users. The book contains many helpful comments addressing real problems. 'The Apple Macintosh Book, Fourth Edition' is Cary Lu's definitive reference on the Apple Macintosh with a host of up-to-date information about System 7.0 operating system and networking issues. The book costs $24.95. 'Danny Goodman's Macintosh Handbook' is a $29.95 reference that tries to capture the spirit of the Mac in the printed form, which makes for some unusual and sometimes strained reading.
