Although Australian opposition leader Kim Beazley started out his election campaign on the right foot, world events intruded to give Prime Minister John Howard and his Coalition government an advantage. The situation with international asylum seekers, and the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US gave Howard the opportunity to call for Australian patriotism.

In summer 2001, the treasurer of te Australian government, Peter Costello, delivered the federal budget, or what has been described by Costello himself as the government's third-term agenda. The voter response to the budget will help the Liberal PArty to determine the date of the upcoming election.
