New Bedford, MA, District Court Judge Robert Kane sentences serious offenders to attend a 12-week course as an alternative to jail. So far, the program, which has stringent rules, has been very successful and there is only a 19% recidivism rate.

The small town of Redford, TX, never had a library and had poor access to school books before Madrid organized a library in part of her husband's general store. The 20,000 titles in the library take up more space than the store.
