Reform must be listened to now

Article Abstract:

The Reform Party's strong showing in the Jun 1997 elections won the party official opposition status and thrust party leader Preston Manning into a prominent role in Canadian politics. He has many good qualities, but he sometimes resorts to old-style political tactics that undermine his agenda.

Jean Chretien's ruling Liberal Party enacted measures to placate Quebec in early 1996, but reneged on promises to extend civil rights protection to gays and lesbians. These moves show that the Liberals are making policy decisions based on their potential impact on the next Canadian election.
