Calgary geologist Andy Evans reached the summit of Mt Everest on May 22, 1997. The following day two other people from Calgary, Alan Hobson and Jamie Clarke, successfully made it to the top. However, only a few weeks earlier three Russians who were part of Evans's team died on their way down.

Byrne is one of the world's best rodeo bullfighters, whose job it is to distract bulls from riders, preventing injury and even death. Byrne began working as a bullfighter in 1987, following a two-year internship with Kelly LaCoste, possibly the greatest bullfighter who ever lived.
