Ruse in Toyland: Chinese Workers' Hidden Woe

Article Abstract:

Kin Ki Industrial, whose employees make the decades-long popoular Etch A Sketch toy for Bryan, OH-based Ohio Art Co., represents an example of Chinese manufacturers who sustain unpleasant working conditions and illegally low wages for its toy workers. Company officials provide official crib sheets that describe a working environment that does not exist whenever Chinese inspectors come to investigate or Ohio Art officials check to insure that their savings from overseas manufacturing are not based upon exploitation of employees. Kin Ki workers are mainly teenage migrants who work seven days per week, make less than 40% of company-stated earnings, and receive no additional benefits. Their recent two-day strike resulted in steps to improve their conditions.
