Child car seats recalled

Article Abstract:

Cosco Inc's Touriva convertible child seats will be recalled, three and a half years after the products failed a federal safety test in August 1996. The test found that a faulty buckle in the car seats would make it difficult to disengage a child from the seat after a crash. Both The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Cosco admitted to committing errors that resulted in the recall delay. The recall involves 200,000 Touriva child car seats.

Article Abstract:

Fisher-Price and Britax will introduce the first child safety seats that conform with the National Highway and Traffic Administration's (NHTA) requirement for uniform attachments on childseats. The NHTA required the manufacture of uniform attachments on child seats to minimize injuries and allow faster and safer child seat installation. The seats to be introduced by Fisher-Price and Baxton will feature two anchors at the bottom of the seat. The anchors will allow easy hooking or buckling onto metal bars in the auto seats. Fisher-Price's Safe Embrace child seat will be available in the market by Feb 1999 for Nissan Motor Corp.

Padding in child car seats studied

Article Abstract:

Infant safety seats are being examined by federal safety investigators after researchers have determined that these devices failed to protect infants from suffering skull fractures in a number of collisions. One of the remedies being considered is the addition of paddings in these seats. A study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration and the Children's National Medical Center also points to the improper installation of infant car seats as a possible cause for such accidents.
