Sagging PC sales growth rate poised to improve
Article Abstract:
A report is expected to announce that international personal computer (PC) shipments increased by 7% in the second quarter of 1998 as compared to the same period in 1997. The report, which was made by International Data Corp., also pointed out that the state of the international PC market was improving although several factors still hampered the growth of quarterly shipments. These factors included the slow growth in Asia, excess inventories and reluctant consumers. The sluggishness of the international PC market has already damaged other sectors of the high-technology industry and these include the chip-making and retailing sectors.

Compaq still atop PC maker chart
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computer is still the world's biggest personal computer (PC) maker, contrary to claims made by rival Dell Computer. According to data gathered by market researcher Dataquest, Compaq shipped 13.7% of the world's PCs in the third quarter, while rivals IBM and Dell shipped only 8.5% and 8.4%, respectively. Although Compaq's shipments slowed down in the first part of 1998 due to market oversupply, the firm was able to recover in the latter part of the year. Compaq's rival, Dell, remains the fastest-growing PC maker in the world.
