Bank first to post billion-dollar quarter

Article Abstract:

Toronto Dominion Bank reported record quarter earnings of C$1.47 billion in the 3rd qtr ended Jul 31, 1999, mainly due to the spinoff of its global discount brokerage division, TD Waterhouse. The earnings also surpassed the bank's record annual profit of C$1.12 billion in 1997. Toronto Dominion will use the generated money from the spinoff to finance TD Waterhouse and to fund advertising and the acqusition of new technology.

TD's Baillie is talk of the Street

Toronto Dominion Bank Chairman Charles Baillie executes strategies that have earned the respect of Bay Street and its competitors. Baillie has led the company to become the second-largest bank in Canada and the top player in terms of one-year return. Central to the executive's strategic actions were a string of acquisitions, including Waterhouse Investor Services Inc of New York, NY, and Canada Trust.
