Should doctors take part in planned suicide?
Article Abstract:
Two medical students express opposing views on whether doctors should perform euthanasia. The first student believes that euthanasia is a merciful way for terminally ill patients to end their suffering and that doctors should respect a patient's right to determine their fate. The second student believes that doctors should not perform euthanasia because it runs against their vocation of healing. Their primary duty is to enhance a patient's well-being. If a cure is no longer possible, doctors can alleviate pain and offer emotional support.

Death with dignity
Article Abstract:
The New Jersey Supreme Court allowed Karen Ann Quinlan, who was comatose from taking drugs and alcohol, to die based on her right to privacy. The Court noted that the only way she could exercise that right in this situation was for her family to act on her behalf. The decision also had an impact on the use of living wills, which are instructions on the use and removal of artificial life supports. Most states now have laws on the use of living wills and provide doctors with immunity from prosecution.

Is the death penalty unjust?
Article Abstract:
The concurring and dissenting opinions of two Supreme Court justices in a death penalty appeals case provide insight to the debate over capital punishment. Opponents claim that capital punishment is not carried out fairly or consistently, making it discriminatory and therefore cruel and unusual. Proponents claim that the Fifth Amendment justifies the death penalty and that lethal injection is neither cruel or unusual.
