Silicon Valley hard at work on Y2K - the election
Article Abstract:
The Silicon Valley's high technology industry has increased its participation in politics since it organized itself in 1996 to fight a California ballot that would have made the companies vulnerable to shareholder suits. The high-tech industry contributed $8.1 million to candidates and parties in 1998, more than twice the contributions in the 1994 congressional election. As the presidential election nears, potential candidates are doing the rounds in the Silicon Valley political circuit to gain the support of the high-tech sector.

Changes in pensions probably will stand
Article Abstract:
International Business Machines Corp (IBM) dropped plans to shift to a cash-balance pension plan from a traditional pension plan following considerable opposition by its employees. However, the controversy will not move the Internal Revenue Service to investigate IBM's plan or any other plan that has already secured approval. Retirees secure a monthly check for their traditional plans for their lifetime, while cash-balance plans favor only younger staff.
