Slipping timetable
Article Abstract:
A nuclear fusion research program takes longer than most scientific research, spanning decades and different batches ofresearchers. Presently, it runs on a specified timetable designated by DOE officials. DOE has set deadlines for fusion research program such as the development of a Tokamak fusion test reactor and burning plasma experiment. TheDOE also aims to reach the completion of facilities such as a demonstration plant by the year 2025. As it is, the research schedule has already been delayed and scientists fear that by the time the machines are built, they wouldbe obsolete.

Energy's holy grail
Article Abstract:
Nucler fusion research commenced during World War II with the theories of thermonuclear reactions within magnetic fields by Dr. Edward Teller and other scientists involved on the Manhattan Project. The US spent millions of dollars in the following decades on fusion research, believing that success will soon be achieved. However, development of a fusion reactor was far more complex thanthe scientists had anticipated. The fading interest of the US government was merely sustained by national pride at being the leader in scientific research and the energy crisis that ensued in 1973.

Political hurdles
Article Abstract:
Political impediments to nuclear fusion research can delay progress in itsdevelopment. Unlike Europe and Japan, the US is not fully committed to the cause of nuclear fusion energy. Since US has other alternative energy resources, Congress is not overly concerned with energy issues. If anything, financial aid to nuclear fusion research is often eyed by government officials when recommending a reduction in federal expenditures.
