An overview is presented of the collapse of the Australian telecommunications company One.Tel and the factors which contributed to it. The comments of a former member of staff have identified that poor technology, bad management and superstition were key variables in the cessation of the business.

The Australian company, Cochlear, is one of the world's best hearing device firms and has enjoyed continued success. The company has promoted and refined a bionic hearing implant to give hearing to 30 000 people, but in 2001 a dispute over patents has marred these achievements.
