The social policies and stands on provincial issues, including Quebec policy, of each of the major parties are briefly analyzed. The ruling Liberals want to recognize Quebec as a distinct society, but allow provinces to veto any constitutional changes they see as adverse.

Many Liberal Party members are angry that Prime Minister Jean Chretien appointed 4 women as candidates in an upcoming election. Most agree that the women are high-quality candidates but they object to Chretien's decision not to use the democratic nomination process.
