Spain asks Boliden to reopen mine
Article Abstract:
Boliden Ltd. is being sought by the Spanish government authorities to reopen its mine in Los Frailes, Spain. The mine was closed after a massive spill of mine waste contaminated about 20 square kilometers of neighboring farmland. The company is being asked to reopen the mine, which employs 500 people, because of its economic impact to the region. However, according to Boliden President Anders Bulow, the process of reopening the mine would take six months to complete as the company considers options of putting future mine waste in a nearby abandoned mine pit.

Arbitragers bet against Zemex bid
Article Abstract:
Zemex Corp.'s $5-per-share bid for Inmet Mining Corp. of Toronto, Ontario, is being challenged by arbitragers. The challenge was demonstrated at the Toronto Stock Exchange on May 20, 1998, when 12.1 million Inmet shares changed ownership at prices that ranged form C$5.05 per share to C$5.30 per share. Investment analysts say that the development is a sign that arbitragers, who made most of the transactions, consider the C$517 million being offered by Toronto, Ontario-based Zemex for Inmet as below the true value of the firm.
