The oil tanker Sea Empress ran aground near a Pembrokeshire harbor in Wales, spilling an estimated 170 million liters of crude oil. The spill caused widespread damage to local populations of aquatic birds and other marine life. A political furor has arisen over who is to blame for the accident.
