Privacy in peril: States act

Article Abstract:

Companies are facing lawsuits and a patchwork of state laws, as states and companies are helping create momentum for consumer-privacy regulation. A bill introduced by the existing chairmen of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Specter, and Sen. Feinstein would streamline the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 (FISA) system without giving the president expansive new wiretapping powers.

Labor unions' future: Legal action

Article Abstract:

A district court in Washington D.C. passed a judgment in August 2005 preventing the Bush administration from implementing portions of rules which scrapped collective-bargaining protections for workers. This is seen as a major breakthrough in favor of labor since governors of many states pass anti-employee laws, which make government employees as insecure as private industrial workers.
