Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien returned home from a trade mission in Feb 1997, to attend the two-day Liberal caucus meeting in Quebec City, Quebec. Although there was some disagreement about the pending budget, party members showed a united front and the mood was upbeat.

Summer of decision

Unconventional wisdom

Article Abstract:

The Liberal party is unlikely to increase its share of Quebec's legislative seats by more than five, despite Prime Minister Jean Chretien's strong relationship with the province and divisions within the Bloc Quebecois. The Liberals may do better in the western provinces.
