Suburban crime: is the middle class threatened by a crime wave?
Article Abstract:
America's suburbs are experiencing increased criminal activity, including many crimes not usually associated with small towns and subdivisions such as raps, car thefts, gang warfare and gunfights. The increase in crime has led to more xenophobic actions by many community leaders, causing some to fear that class and race divisions are going to widen. Many community leaders blame troublemakers from the inner-cities for the crime in their neighborhoods, while others argue that suburban crime is committed by suburban criminals. A detailed analysis of the topic is included.

Underage drinking: the issues
Article Abstract:
Underage drinking is a social problem long in the limelight in spite of signs of progress in efforts to curb teenage alcohol abuse. Much of the attention is due to Surgeon General Antonia Novello's much-publicized reports that dramatize the extent of underage drinking and how alcohol advertisements influence the youth. The alcoholic beverage industry views the surgeon general's moves as a means by which federal agencies can maintain their big budgets and as a curtailment of their rights to free speech.

Northern Ireland cease-fire
Article Abstract:
Prospects for peace in Northern Ireland are better than they have been in decades. A landmark meeting between Gerry Adams and Sir Patrick Mayhew took place in 1994, at the behest of the US, and the cease fire they agreed upon has held. Business investment and tourism in the region have increased, and the British have begun withdrawing troops. The century-long history between Britain and Northern Ireland suggests that tensions in the region will not disappear.
