Southam's Post boasts of circulation success

Southam Inc. of Toronto, Ontario, has decided to keep producing 325,000 copies of its national newspaper in Canada called the National Post every day despite lack of certainty over the consumer demand. This development is meant to assure advertisers of the viability of the publication which will cost subscribers $10 per month until the end of 1998. Southam plans to increase the subscription rate to $12 per month in 1999 while the publisher's local newspapers will charge subscribers $6 more to get the National Post.

AT&T bid for Media One boosts Canadian cable stocks
Article Abstract:
AT and T Corp has offered to acquire MediaOne Group for $92 billion in cash and stock. The deal value each of MediaOnes' five million subscribers at $7,250. The deal would allow AT&T to directly access 16 million households in the US. MediaOne's 25% stake in another cable company Time Warner Inc would also enable AT&T to gain access into almost 50% of the 100 million US households. The proposed acquisition also pushed up most of Canadian cable stocks to record highs on Apr 23, 1999.
