Telecommunications' ubiquitous man of influence; Dick Wiley shapes public policy as well as corporate strategy

Article Abstract:

Richard Wiley, former Federal Communications Commission chairman and now head of an advisory group supervising the US effort to select a standard for high-definition television (HDTV) broadcasting, is one of the most influential personalities in the telecommunications industry. He is now a partner in a Washington law firm specializing in telecommunications and has several former FCC officials on his staff. Wiley has crafted a provision in new cable-television regulation that would force cable companies to pay large royalties to over-the-air broadcasters. The former FCC head works 75-hour weeks, and his firm has represented clients ranging from McCaw Cellular Communications to cable giant Tele-Communications Inc to the Walt Disney Company.

'Baby Bells,' newspapers in a brawl

Article Abstract:

Newspaper publishers lobby to prevent Bell telephone companies from entering the information business. In Oct 1991, a Federal appeals court ruled that the telephone companies will no longer be prohibited from owning information services. Publishers have responded by trying to get Congress to legislate to nullify the court's decision. The American Newspaper Publishers Association is especially active. News publishers fear that telephone companies might attract their classified advertising by offering inexpensive electronic bulletin boards. Representatives of both industries have retained lobbyists and media advisers, and the struggle will probably cost millions of dollars before the issue is settled.
