Thaksin the tough guy: Is the hard-charging leader exacerbating separatist tensions?

It is reported that everybody, from the media to leading academics to the revered royal family is urging the Thai prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra to take a softer approach to the spiraling unrest in Thailand's Muslim-dominated southern region. People fear that while Thaksin downplays the violence and says peace will come soon, a full-scale Islamic jihad could be in the offing unless the prime minister changes course.

A peace plan?

The Thai envoys are carrying out negotiations with Burahanudin, a cleric who is in contact with the main separatist group responsible for violence in Southern Thailand. Burahanudin has close contacts with the separatist group and therefore could persuade them to give up arms and return to Thailand.
