The 1996 Summer Olympics marks the 100th anniversary of the modern Games and some lament that the Games have gotten too commercial and violate ancient traditions. However, experts on the ancient games say commercialism, cheating, and the emphasis on winning have always been part of the Games.

Countries attending the Kyoto summit on global warming agreed that the 38-most developed nations would reduce emissions by an average of 5.2%. Some countries agreed to even higher reductions. Canada will try to achieve pre-1990 levels by 2012. Details of the summit are given.
