Politics in the US is traditionally composed of conservatives on the right, and liberals on the left, both of which seek to compromise somewhere in the middle of that continuum. This mythical middle ground is often treated as a solution, one which is based on perceived realities that do not exist.

Politics: Should Election Day be a Holiday?
Article Abstract:
Voting rates, especially younger less educated Americans are dismal and getting worse despite enactment of automatic voter registration during motor vehicle registration. Making the second Tuesday of November a national holiday, combined with Veteran's Day, is one simple way to increase turnout.

The disunited states: "devolution" - shifting power from Washington to the fifty states - is no cure for what ails American government
Article Abstract:
Americans seem to agree that governmental power should be shifted to the states. However, a 10% increase in efficiency as a result of state control would only reduce government costs by less than 0.5%. Decentralization should not occur in the management of poverty and education.
