Programs intended to help rural Australians have been eroded, according to the mayor of Mt. Isa, which is 1,900 km northwest of Brisbane, and whose population has fallen about 33% since 1980 to just 21,000. Many workers in Mt. Isa actually live elsewhere, and fly home each weekend to spend their money. But mine developers say that many recruits stipulate that they will only sign on if they can live on the coast.

Magistrate Brain Deegan is contesting the elections as an independent against Alexander Downer and this has led the much-travelled minister to be a regular sight in his Adelaide Hills-based electorate.
