Critics state that Food and Drug Administration regulators rush to review applications for new medicines but are slow to address safety problems that come to light after drug has entered the market. In order to restore public confidence in the nations prescription-drug supply, Michael Leavitt, the Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary, plans to create the Drug Safety Oversight Board which will disseminate, via the internet and fliers, information about risks discovered about a drug after it is released to the market.

Consumer advocates are raising their concerns over potentially dangerous dietary supplements.
