Cellular radio can be traced to mobile communications research conducted in the US in 1921. Service was first offered there in 1979. In Canada, cellular radio first became available in limited areas in 1985. Service is now available from coast to coast, and growth has been strong.

Article Abstract:
Cellular radio was introduced in Canada in 1985, and the country now has one of the fastest adoption rates in the world. Canadian users totaled 600,000 in 1991, and are expected to reach three to four million by 2000. An overview of the industry and the technology is presented.

Mobile data transmission systems transmit complex information from a field person's computer to the main computer of a head office or other central location. The systems also give field personnel access to the data banks of the central computer.
