Australian civil service has changed its attitude. The cliche of uncaring, inefficient layabouts has become responsive to public needs, with department heads appointed and sometimes dismissed according to their abilities to implement new policies. Some government employees feel the role of some intermediaries has become less vital, while some analysts believe reforms are long overdue and will improve governmental image.

The practice is not an issue of technology but culture. The existence of electronics and paper documents will force organizations to invest in integrated document production equipment.

The petroleum retailing industry in Australia has warned the federal government that unless it is deregulated, it may have to close down refineries, cut down the number of service stations, and consider its future in Australia. However, the John Howard government seems to be in no hurry to implement any promises it had made.
