The states and federalism; should more power be shifted to the states?

Article Abstract:

A growing movement is asserting devolution of federalism to shift more power to states. This is exemplified by the 1994 Republican Congress, although Democrats can also support devolution. The Supreme Court has given some decisions favoring states, and the court will also consider the Brady handgun control law. Congress and Pres Bill Clinton have also established a new law to curtail unfunded federal mandates. Such mandates require activities by states without providing federal financial support.

Gun control standoff: both sides remain unmoved in bitter debate

Article Abstract:

The first federal firearms law was enacted in 1968, and debate over gun control has continued for three decades. Supporters of gun control cite handgun availability as the reason for violent crime and suicides, while advocates of firearms feel they deter crime and point to declining homicide rates. US gun manufacturers agreed in Oct 1997 to include trigger locks on handguns, but voters in Washington state defeated a measure requiring gun safety training for gun users in Nov 1997.
