This article presents a personal account of the last days of the United Nations compound in East Timor in September 1999, when pro-Indonesian militiamen rioted in opposition to the referendum in which most of East Timor's people voted for independence from Indonesia. Relevant details include evidence that the Indonesian military planned this campaign of terror and intimidation to deter other parts of Indonesia from seeking independence and to carry out its threat of ruining East Timor before it receives independence.

The growing incidence of smuggling of illegal immigrants out of Thailand to Australia is discussed. The exploitation of migrants from Russia and Iraq by criminals and the moves by Thai authorities to prevent and reduce the trade are explored.
