The unkindest cuts: the CBC is set to downsize - will it survive?

CBC pres Perrin Beatty announced budget cuts of $127 million, that will be phased in over 18 months. The cuts will affect both CBC Radio and Television and will result in layoffs for 2,500 people. Beatty says the cuts will return CBC to its original mandate focusing on public service programming.

The widespread policy among cable television providers of charging subscribers fees to add new channels such as Showcase and Bravo could make it difficult for these channels to gain a foothold in Canada. The programming of the seven new channels is described.
