Even Jon Stanhone was skeptical of terror laws and made it known clearly that the new anti-terrorism laws could not be supported without adequate safeguards. He was criticized that political expediency dictated that opposing Prime Minister John Howard would be political suicide but he held on and accordingly the laws made suitable provisions.

Timor: envoy claims US kept in dark

Article Abstract:

A diplomat at the United States (US) embassy has supported the allegations made by the Lance Collins report, which states that the Australian intelligence withheld information regarding East Timor from the US. These allegations had been refuted by the governments of Australia and the US and had destroyed the career of Lt Col Lance Collins.

The confidential documents of the government reveal that the Prime Minister, John Howard approved the new salary bands for senior staff and some ministers on Australian Workplace Agreements. Some of the senior government staff is paid salaries beyond the pay scales recommended under the Member of Parliament Staff Act.
